DHI Hair Transplant Technique: A New Method or Marketing Strategy?
While some research considers the DHI hair transplant technique as a new hair transplant method, certain scientific sources argue that it is not a new technique but rather a marketing strategy. They state that this method is simply a variation of the FUE technique, performed with an implanter.
How Is Hair Transplantation Performed Using the DHI Technique?
The DHI technique can be explained as a method where hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and directly implanted into the recipient area without the need to create channels, unlike FUE. The Implanter/Choi needle, which has a very fine, cylindrical, and sharp structure, functions like a channel. The hair follicles are placed into the needle and then pushed along the channel for implantation.
Stages of DHI Hair Transplantation
In hair transplantation using the Choi implanter pen, hair follicles are carefully placed one by one into the pen. After the assistants place the follicles, they hand them over to the specialist for implantation. The doctor then implants the follicles at an angle of 40-45 degrees. Another important factor is that the transplant must follow the direction of the person’s natural hair.
After the hair follicles are placed into the Choi needle and the angle and direction are determined, the follicles are implanted by the needle's pushing feature. In this procedure, between 2 to 6 Choi pens and 15-16 Choi tips may be used. The size of the pen tips may vary depending on the thickness and structure of the hair follicles.
DHI hair transplantation has several advantages and disadvantages when compared to the FUE method.
Advantages of DHI Technique
Here are some of the main advantages noted by experts:
It minimizes the time the hair follicles spend outside the tissue, leading to healthier transplantation.
The survival rate of the hair follicles is higher.
Less incision is made, reducing the risk of bleeding.
Recovery is faster, allowing the person to return to their daily life in a short period.
This technique allows for non-shaven hair transplantation, which is easier to perform.
Disadvantages of DHI Technique
Compared to the FUE method, there are some disadvantages, including:
Doctors and their teams must undergo extensive training to master this technique.
It is more expensive than other methods.
The person performing the transplant must be highly skilled and in excellent condition. Since the transplant area is narrow, inexperienced practitioners may damage the surrounding hair follicles while working in such a confined space.
A Zero-Pain Method in Hair Transplantation!
With sedation under the supervision of an anesthesia specialist, even the local anesthesia procedures before the hair transplant are painless, resulting in a more comfortable, pain-free experience. Hair transplant procedures are generally not very painful, and this method is especially comfortable for those with a fear of needles. With this approach, the minimal pain typically felt is almost completely eliminated.
Sedation is a customized, scalable sleep state using sedative drugs that preserves reflexes while controlling the depth of sleep. This technique can be used even in children, making the hair transplant pain-free. However, the choice of sedation is entirely up to the patient.
Is DHI Hair Transplant Suitable for Everyone?
The method was first applied at Kyungpook University in Korea. According to research findings, it was concluded that not every patient is suitable for hair transplantation with the Choi pen. This is due to the difficulty of placing fine and curly hair follicles into the implanter tip without damaging them. Subsequent studies led to the development of implanter pens that are suitable for a wider range of hair types, not just thick Asian hair. The implanter pens used today range from 0.64 mm to 1.0 mm in diameter.
Thanks to scientific and technological advancements, hair transplantation using Choi tips is now safely performed. Therefore, in specialized clinics, hair transplants with Choi tips are providing effective and predictable natural-looking results.
